One month after the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and one month before Robert F. Kennedy’s violent death, the mutilated body of an unidentified young black man is discovered in the woods near Mary’s house in small town Texas. Mary, one of five black women who toil in a hot, airless kitchen, struggles through a day of fear and speculation with her coworkers on her shift of a Whites Only diner. The women of varying ages and views grapple with life as they know it on the cusp of social and personal change, battling poverty, prejudice, ignorance and each other.
